Who would have thought that a few small pieces of paper could make a difference in one's life? A small, rectangular shape carved from a tree could give you power as easily as it could take it away; Decide wether you and your family ate that night or not. As much as people hate to believe it, there really is such a destructive piece of paper. It's called money.
Usually, that was something that Stefani and the rest of the Thomasetta family never had. They had what they needed to get by and nothing more. Sometimes they didn't even have that much. With a family of eleven children(plus, of course, the one parent they had), the budget was rather high. All the extra money that Stef made, along with that made by her older siblings, Mary, Beth, Chris, Clare, and Joe went straight towards helping buy the groceries for that week. Sometimes even the money that Theresa, the next child in the family after Stef, made from working the drive-through window at McDonalds went to things for the family.
Today, however, was one of the rare occassions that Stefani had an extra twenty dollar bill in her pocket. She had her birthday late in August, and had gotten about $100 from miscellaneous relatives. Even when Stef had offered it to her mother for groceries and bills and such, she refused to take it. The one rule that her mother had about money was never taking birthday or Christmas money from her children, no matter what the situation. Since the end of August, Stef had been gradually spending her birthday money in little bits, saving most of it for a time when she'd really need it.
And that was how she found herself standing in the 'rock' section at CJ's music store. After a month or so of having no real emergency where she desperately needed her birthday money, she decided to spend what was left of it on something for her entertainment. She browsed through the many CD's that the store had to offer, looking for a cover that really caught her eye. She didn't really have any idea of what to get. Her friends had recommended some bands to her, and, if worst came to worst, she'd settle for something they thought of.
She walked down the aisle slowly, making sure she didn't skip any of the many CD's. There was so much of a selection; How did they expect her to choose just one? She was looking through the band's whose name started with 'B' when something finally caught her eye. The cover was interesting. Sort of plain, but not at the same time. The band was called Boys Like Girls and the album was self titled. She knew she had heard a few of their songs on the radio, and they were really good. She turned, examining the CD in more detail before deciding to buy it or not.
